Rec Room
Arts and Bar

MISSION

OVERVIEW

Rec Room Arts is a professional non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is the only performance company and venue in Houston dedicated to presenting and developing performance of every discipline. In our short history, we have produced hundreds of shows, cultivated a creative home for downtown Houston, and garnered the support of local businesses and cultural institutions. Our passion is to create epic stories in small spaces. Whether those stories are told through theatre, music, dance, opera, or comedy, we work to make them unique and awe inspiring. We are advocates for new work and innovative artists. We believe that in order for our city to be truly progressive and world-class, it must create and participate in progressive art. We work everyday to be part of that progression.

MISSION

TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE WORK BY EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS ACROSS DISCIPLINES IN ORDER TO ENERGIZE A NEW GENERATION OF AUDIENCES FOR THE ARTS.

Rec Room Arts produces full seasons of performances, supports a yearly artist residency program, and hosts community events. We nurture both established and developing artists from our community and beyond by providing a space to present new work that challenges the definition of art and performance in modern America. By giving artists an affordable platform to create, we are enabling the development of radical new work that will continue to put Houston on the map.

BELIEFS

  • In order for the arts to survive, artists must constantly challenge and reinvent existing forms.

  • In order for artists to grow, thrive, and ultimately contribute to the cultural fabric of a community, they need resources and support.

  • Performing arts across disciplines shouldn’t be limited to holidays and special occasions. Rather, performing arts events should be frequent, diverse, and built into the cultural fabric of a community. Our organization aims to engage, educate, inspire and empower our community through the performing arts.

Houston’s Rec Room is a place to see quirky performances and shows of general weirdness, from theatrical rock funeral wakes to live comedy podcast recordings to parody reenactments of 90s cult television.”
— Tarra Gaines, Arts & Culture Texas
In a city rich with theater, its co-founders, Stephanie Wittels Wachs and Matt Hune, hope to make the Rec Room a place that celebrates innovative and interactive approaches to theater as well as the cultural nostalgia that binds us together through various pop-culture references.
— Andrew Dansby, Houston Chronicle
If it sounds like a much less buttoned up theatre experience than you might experience elsewhere in Downtown—or Houston at large—that’s the whole point.
— HOLLY BERETTO, DOWNTOWN MAGAZINE
Open since June 2016, Rec Room provides an accessible and welcoming artistic space where comedy, improv, theater, storytelling, and any kind of performance (like staged readings of My So-Called Life) can live.
